To Reduce Stress: Get Writing!
It’s that time of year again. Alarms are starting to get set for 7:30 a.m. and the scent of textbooks lingers in the air. I still remember my first week of undergraduate classes four years ago. The first few days were great, but all of a sudden things like homework, assignments, and labs started to pile up before I had a chance to realize it—and then came the stress. At the time, Netflix was my method of choice to de-stress from everything I had to do. The Huffington Post article, “5 Ways Keeping A Journal Can Help You De-Stress“, suggests that journaling is a therapeutic way to reduce stress, anxiety, and inspire creativity.
The article provides 5 reasons why writing can reduce stress. For one, it forces you to recharge and collect your thoughts in the absence of technology or social media. It’s easy to procrastinate by opening up your laptop and spending a copious amount of time on social media. Writing in a journal can help you relax and motivate you to start checking things off your to-do list. It can also make you happier! Gratitude journaling allows you to record positive thoughts so that you can appreciate what you have, instead of what you don’t. Organizing your thoughts in a journal can actually foster problem-solving skills, which in turn reduce the stress of negative thoughts. Journaling can also help you throw away negative thoughts by transferring them onto paper and then throwing that paper out. Lastly, journaling is empowering. By recording events that happened in your life, you remind yourself that you have the power to change what you don’t like.
So 1 thing you should do today? Shut down your laptop, grab a pen and notebook and write in a journal. Whether it’s writing about what you did throughout the day, or how you feel about something that happened days ago, JUST DO IT!
