With the holidays rapidly approaching, you can leave exam stress. The holidays are a time to de-stress, indulge in food (lots of it), and give and receive gifts! For some, however, going home for the holidays can be a stressful time. It can be difficult to balance family, friends, and loved ones. Often times we forget about how important it is to leave some time for ourselves. Here are some tips for balancing your time during the holiday season.
Friends & Family
Coming home for the holidays involves lots of plans with both family and friends. However, making time for all your loved ones is often a hard task to accomplish. Using a planner to write down when you have family holiday parties can help you ensure that you don’t have any conflicting events. Have a night where you have a conflicting schedule? Split the night in two so you can go to your family holiday party and then join your friends later.
Be realistic with your planning while you want to see everyone, you don’t want to be stressful. Sometimes if you have committed to too many plans you will stress yourself out trying to balance them all. Don’t commit to more than you can handle, a planner will help with this. This will also help you see if you have some extra free time so you can reach out to a friend to make plans.
People who have a strong network of family and friends are better at controlling stress and anxiety, so don’t let this holiday season bring you any of that.
Set some time aside for yourself
Keep in mind that the holidays are not just for you to spend time with friends and family. It’s also a time to take care of yourself! You do not have to say YES to every plan that comes your way, give yourself an hour or two to relax each day. Do something that you haven’t had time to do during the busy semester such as reading a book, watching your favourite TV show, even taking your dog for a walk. Self-care is extremely important for your physical and mental health. Using these tips for balancing your time will help you have an enjoyable holiday season and stay healthy!
Happy holidays and enjoy your time off with friends, family and most importantly, don’t forget to take care of yourself!
