What I Do When I’m Having A Bad Day

Unfortunately, everybody has those days when they wake up “on the wrong side of the bed”, or days when nothing seems to be going as expected. We all know the struggle of trying to fix these bad days but, here are some of things I personally do when I want to turn my day around. I hope some of them work for you!

1. Exercise

I am sure you have heard the old, latin proverb “Mens sana in corpore sano”, which in English means “A healthy mind in a healthy body”. Even ancient civilizations knew the positive impact of physical activity on the mind. I put exercise first on this list, not because I am a gym junkie, but because I am a firm believer in exercising when you’re in a bad mood. Exercise has been proven to have significant and wide ranging effects on the mind and body. It can improve sleeping patterns or simply make you feel happy after your workout. If its a nice day out I love going for either a run or a walk. If you don’t have the energy to hit the gym remember, even walking is better than nothing. Just get moving and enjoy the fresh air!

2. Music or podcasts

Whether it’s listening to your favourite artist/album or an upbeat playlist on Spotify, music is a great way to brighten your mood. Even if you haven’t found a genre that speaks to you put something on regardless! Music, no matter the kind, helps to get your mind off of whatever is bothering you. I am also a huge fan of podcasts as you can choose from a wide variety of topics from funny to scary to educational. Podcasts are great because, unlike music, they force you to listen to what is being said instead of what is going on in your mind.

3. Movies/TV-shows

Sometimes watching a good movie or binge-watching your favourite series on Netflix is all it takes to make your day just a little better. Just make sure to watch something uplifting or funny and are actually watching! Sometimes sad movies can trigger real emotions in us so you want to avoid watching anything that will upset you.

4. Treat yourself!

It is so important to incorporate some self-care into your routine. We are often so busy that we neglect ourselves in favour of fulfilling our obligations. Self-care, however, can help turn any bad day around. Even if you don’t feel like leaving the house there is plenty of self-care you can do at home! But let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a good manicure or walk on Queen Street when their having a bad day? Whether its shopping, getting yourself an extra large coffee or baking those delicious chocolate chip banana muffins you have been dying to try, just DO something that makes you happy!

5. Surrounding yourself with loved ones or friends

Sometimes, all it takes is a distraction to make a bad day better. Surrounding yourself with people you love and trust means you can confide in them about why your day gone bad. If you don’t feel like talking about it, your friends and family can just distract you and cheer you up. There are some bad days where you just want to be alone… and that is totally fine too! Just make sure to follow some of the other tips to try and turn your day around and don’t isolate yourself too much. We often tell ourselves that the people in our lives don’t care but in reality they are often very ready to help!
